The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) presents

Ariel’s Dream
NICA National Circus Centre
Green Street, Prahran
Fall under the spell of magical mayhem in this family show by NICA’s 1st and 2nd year students.
Melbourne audiences will have an opportunity to experience the extraordinary skills and beauty of Australia’s next generation of circus stars in June when the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) presents an enchanting production of contemporary circus and physical theatre inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and including spellbinding aerial routines choreographed by Svetlana Yarosh, guest artist at NICA supported by the HSBC Cultural Exchange Programme.
Ariel’s Dream transports us to a world of magic and adventure where love and retribution jostle for a position on the high wire. Set on an imaginary island, the exuberant cast brew up a storm to a tempestuous tempo. This is the first time the 21 second year students – average age 21 – will perform their specialty skills to an audience. Performers include Nathan Boyle, an outstanding aerialist with a background in sports acrobatics at a national level; Sage Cushman, a tattoo artist before catching the circus bug; Tomoko Saka, who worked as roving performer, mime artist and cartoon character dancer in Japan before moving to Australia to study at NICA; Jarred Dewey, an outstanding contortionist who lists being able to sit on his own head as a major achievement and Brittannie Portelli who represented Australia at the world championships of aerobic gymnastics. They will be supported by the first year students providing the rollicking chorus and big group numbers. Ariel’s Dream is directed by NICA Performance Coordinator, Megan Jones, an actor, director and teacher who has trained and performed in Film, TV and Theatre in Australia and overseas. “The show is a collaborative work that draws from the creative energies of the students, trainers and creative team. There will be many original acts and some surprises!” Sixty young people study at NICA’s world-class facility, with a steely determination to graduate with a Bachelor of Circus Arts degree after 3 years. NICA is the only training institution of its kind in Australia – a global centre of teaching excellence for professional training, innovation and creativity in cutting-edge, contemporary circus arts. This is an opportunity to see amazing young Australian talents, elite artists who have trained fifty hours a week for the last eighteen months, in their first NICA performance. Ariel’s Dream is unmissable circus for all ages! www.nica.com.au
