Australians have waited patiently for Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaption to head down under, and now the time has come for Melbournians. The national tour kicked off in July, and they have saved the best until last (at least we think so) ending the two-month tour in Melbourne, Geelong and Albury. The stage adaptation has played in New York, Chicago and London, winning awards and capturing the hearts of new and old fans of Winnie and his friends. Winnie will be joined by Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit and Owl, and all will be portrayed through life-size puppetry. For millennials who grew up enjoying adventures in Hundred Acre Woods.
The creator is Australian-American creative Jonathan Rockefeller, inspired by the beloved books by A.A.Milne and the classic Disney featurettes. Jonathan Rockefeller and Rockefeller Studios have received global acclaim for their adaptations of such iconic works as Winnie the Pooh, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Paddington Bear. Rockefeller’s production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, based on the books of renowned author/illustrator Eric Carle, and toured in over 12 countries.
I recall seeing theatre with my parents as a young child, and this was such a significant influence on my life and how I enjoyed the arts. Life-size puppetry is such a unique art form and such a fantastic way to see your favourite book or film characters in person. Here’s what Jonathan Rockefeller had to say about the performance.
“The music, the spectacular life-size puppets, and the charming performances are the perfect way to introduce (or re-introduce) audiences to live theatre, and this is a must-see show for Winnie the Pooh fans. We are excited to bring the Hundred Acre Wood to Australia so that audiences of all ages can join us for this heartwarming production” says Jonathan Rockefeller.
