Mister Nice Guy is not only the best vegan bakery in Melbourne, but it is also a strong contender for the best allergy-friendly bakery in the state. Located on the bustling Union Road in Ascot Vale, Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop was established in 2017 and was Melbourne’s first 100% plant-based bakery. Since then, Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop has gained a cult following.
Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop has a quality range of plant-based milk and makes great coffee for takeaway or to enjoy while you watch the foot traffic on Union Road. They also create custom cakes for all occasions, making hosting all too easy. Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop opens at 9am, and it is very common for the bakery to close early in the day due to being sold out. Let that tell you everything you need to know about this incredibly delicious bakery.
Sweet vegan bakery goods
Nothing sold at this cafe has eggs, milk, or any other animal products, so vegans can very confidently walk in and order the first thing that jumps out of them. Given that most bakeries have milk and eggs, this is a huge win for the vegan community who can enjoy cupcakes, doughnuts, brownies, scrolls and so many more goodies.
Our favourite sweet vegan bakery goods are the peanut butter chocolate brownie, chocolate walnut brownie, cinnamon scroll bun and the vanilla lavender cupcake. Often it can be hard to get that spongey texture without eggs, and sometimes no milk can rob a pastry of a creamy flavour. Well, Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop creates absolute magic and their team of pastry chefs never ceases to fail.
Savoury vegan bakery goods
If you love a flakey savoury pastry or a scroll you can pull apart, then Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop is your stop. Whether you like faux meat or prefer an authentic vegan diet, the savoury items are worth trying, you can choose straight out of the cabinet or get a sub made to order. There are also family-size quiches and bagels so that you can grab one for dinner or get a few and freeze them for those busy times when you need dinners prepared. Our favourite savoury vegan bakery goods are the Vegemite scrolls, sausage rolls and spinach triangles.
Custom vegan cakes for special events
Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop makes decadent pre-ordered cakes with decorations that are suitable for both kid’s and adult parties. In early 2022, my son turned one and we planned a birthday party with friends and family. My son is allergic to peanuts and dairy and I am coeliac, so we had some clear parameters for the cake selection. We chose an incredible cake that had a beautiful design, and there was even enough for us to freeze after the party and enjoy later!
There are 49 custom vegan cakes to choose from, and they are broken into vanilla base vegan cakes, chocolate base vegan cakes and chocolate cakes. There is also the freedom to personalise the cake with a special message and you can even choose where the cake is ready to be collected. You can check out the custom vegan cake selection here.
There are tiered cakes that are ideal for larger parties, and you can order this vegan cake to serve different group sizes. On average, the 52-serve cake size is $205, 72-serve cake size is $310 and 100-serves is $425.
Leading the way in vegan cakes and allergy-friendly food
Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop is the brainchild of husband and wife, Lucas Cool and Deb Kantor. They were dissatisfied with the lack of food available for those living with food intolerances and were sick of feeling terrible after eating food that claimed to be allergy friendly. The couple started this venture by becoming the baker at Lentil As Anything, and when the demand for vegan cakes outgrew the capacity, Lucas and Deb progressed to a new outlet and eventually opened Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop in 2010. Oh, and the team allude on the website that they might need to open a new store soon… so stay tuned!
Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop is also popular for individuals who are soy free, gluten free, wheat free and nut free. Mainstream cafes and restaurants are often hesitant to commit to an exclusive allergy free menu, and this is largely due to the production areas being contaminated with certain allergens used in other menu items. Given that Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop has mastered a 100% vegan menu, their approach to soy free, gluten free, nute free and
