Those with the finger on the pulse of what goes on in Melbourne will be well aware of the stalwart restaurant, Taxi Kitchen Melbourne. In the second-to-none location of Federation Square, Taxi Kitchen occupies the first level of a glass building that overlooks the Yarra River, Flinders Station and the bustling city sprawl. Popular among city workers and weekend revellers, Taxi Kitchen is a great place to get together for lunch or for Friday drinks as the central location is convenient for all and the food and drink menu never disappoints.
We were very excited to see that Taxi Kitchen Melbourne had launched a new lunch menu and thought it was a great excuse to get back to one of our favourite haunts. The Feed Me Lunch menu, cheekily known as the FML menu, allows patrons to pick from a selection of shares and starters for an affordable $45 per person available between 12-3pm. We can vouch that it is the perfect option on those FML kinds of days.
The Taxi Kitchen menu
The only issue we had with the Feed Me Lunch Taxi Kitchen menu is that there were too many dishes we wanted to try! The Feed Me Lunch menu includes three small plates and one large plate, with the portion sizes tailored to the size of the group. We made a booking for a table of two and said about dissecting the menu, so we ordered a good sampling of protein, vegetables, and culinary styles. For the small plates, we wanted to have fish and beef, with some hearty vegetables. The larger plate was an easier pick, as we couldn’t go past the duck and the amazing service staff assured us it was a great choice. Here’s what we ordered:
Small plates
- Turnip cake, shiitake, spring onion, Chinkiang & ginger dressing
- Hiramasa kingfish sashimi, lemongrass, kaffer lime, coconut
- Stone Axe wagyu, smoked miso mayonnaise, capers, radish
Main
- Szechuan spiced duck, watercress, chilli dressing
It’s hard to say which was the best dish we tried, as they all brought something. The turnip cake was absolutely incredible and such a unique way to get your heart vegetables into your lunch, and the top layer of the cake was so crispy. The Hiramasa kingfish sashimi and the lime and coconut added dimension to the light yet substantial dish. The duck had to be the stand-out, and for the two of us dining it looked to be that a whole dock came out. The chilli dressing had a runny texture to it making it very easy to spread with the assistance of the lime, transforming the taste of the duck. Incredible!
Now that we have sold you the food, we must mention the cocktail we ordered. We agonised over which cocktail to order and thankfully we got an expert recommendation from the team and decided on the Gin Yuzu cocktail. It was absolutely delicious, fresh and the perfect addition to the meal.
