I like Melbourne. It has a physically closer feel, in terms of people and experiences than my hometown of Brisbane. My favourite grandson (currently the only grandson) lives in Melbourne. AFL’s gain will be Rugby’s loss based on his early growth stats. Balancing this is the delight of making multiple trips to Melbourne every year. No doubt he will be guzzling the Padre coffee pods in no time!
My last trip involved a visit to Padre at South Melbourne Market. We had a great breakfast and the coffee, long black no sugar, was delicious. I must have commented on it a few times that trip because on my Birthday I received a box of 30 Padre Coffee Pods. A little bit of Melbourne right here in my Brisbane kitchen.
Padre Nespresso compatible pods
The journey to using the Nespresso compatible coffee machine for my wife and me (yes we are Boomers and yes we have messed up everything, and I yes am sorry) was a slow and difficult one. However, with the unflagging encouragement of my Melbourne based coffee savvy daughter, pod coffee has become a staple part of my diet. Not so much for my wife who still likes to drive to the local bakery and queue for 15 minutes to get a barista-made coffee. I have had two coffees in that time (and before you start, my latest blood pressure test was 119/72, and yes it was this year, not ten years ago).
When the supermarket discount pods I had been using, and I had stockpiled them assuming a nuclear winter was imminent, were finally exhausted it was time to go Padre. The aroma was different and the flavour was a delight. Almost transported back in Melbourne with that first sip (except I wasn’t wearing a jumper, it wasn’t raining and I was actually being bitten by a mosquito).
That is when I made the fatal mistake. Excitedly I called my daughter and profusely thanked her for the wonderful gift. Supermarket discount pods would be forever dead to my taste buds! My wife, having heard the call asked if I would make her a Padre coffee. If I could have seen into the future I would have faked a heart attack there and then and hoped the confusion with the ambulance would have distracted her. However, oblivious to my folly, I made her one.
Padre coffee pods vs supermarket pods
She marvelled at the flavour and declared that this was better than the barista coffee she struggled to get every morning on the weekend. She slipped past me, with a whiff of Padre coffee pods and determination, and looked into the box of Padre pods and then looked at me. “I think it would be nice if these were just for me. You know, something special, just for me.”
I bought a box of supermarket discount pods the next day and every time my taste buds protest I remind myself that I will keep my mouth shut the next time something wonderful comes my way from Melbourne. Something special, something for me.
