I was a devout follower of the Boob to Food (@boobtofood) Instagram from the first trimester. After Reuben arrived this account became even more relevant, and while the content was predominantly geared to solids and baby led weaning, I still resonated with Luka’s journey as a mother even when solids seemed so far into the future. But eventually, there I was, with all the kid’s crockery gear and NO idea.

I bought the Milk to Meals recipe book straight away, as I thought it was easier than simply screenshotting all the baby led recipes and solids tips I was seeing on the Boob to Food Instagram.

Here is our review of the Milk to Meals book, our favourite Boob to Food recipes and our biggest takeaway from this stunning book.

3 Best Boob to Food book recipes (according to us!)

Truth be told, the book was very intimidating originally when I flipped through the gorgeous, healthy meals. I went in search of what I thought would be the easiest to make, and from there I was hooked and was desperate to try all of these Boob to Food recipes. The baby led weaning ideas I got from the maternal nurse were rather lacklustre, so if you have found the same – then you need to get the Milk to Meals book.

1. The Green Hulk Omelette

If your little one likes bright colours, then you will love the Green Hulk Omelette (on page 250). All you need is a food processor, and a couple of yummy ingredients: eggs, rice flour, plant milk, baby spinach, basil leaves and butter or ghee. I think the bright green colour, spongey texture and lightweight made this an interesting change for my son so he was curious about it right away.

The recipe makes enough for one baby and one adult – so I got to feel pretty healthy having some green omelettes for breakfast.

2. Fermented Cashew Cheese

My son is allergic to cow’s milk protein, so cheese is not an option and we loved this dairy free boob to food recipe. The fermented cashew cheese recipe is something the whole household eats, but you will have to delay gratification as the fermentation process takes a little while. This baby led weaning recipe appealed to us as fermented cashew cheese is rich in calcium, fibre, vitamin B and protein.

You can also paste this on vegetables, fruit, seed crackers and really anything that your baby is enjoying at any given time. This is a great cheese alternative as it is richer in minerals and vitamins.

3. Boob to Food gummies

This is a recipe that is so fun to make and watch your little one enjoy, and the Boob to Food gummy recipe is free to access on the website here. Boob to Food gummies, and gelatin in general, are having a real moment. Gelatin is a superfood and has many benefits to the gut and your child’s immunity. Not to mention, when you cut these Boob to Food gummies into fun shapes they become a fun activity for your kids, and great to display at kids’ parties and playdates.

You can add all kinds of fruit flavourings to your gelatin gummy recipes, like mango or watermelon. We love the Nutra Organics collagen and have a couple of flavours!

So, what’s in the Boob to Food Milk to Meals book?

You will find more than just boob to food recipes in this book, as it is more of an educational resource. Like the boob to food Instagram account, the book contains lots of advice and ideas that are about baby led weaning – so you are getting more than you bargained for!

Milk to Meals is broken up into 10 parts. Some or all of these parts may be relevant for you, and they are:

  1. Breastfeeding
  2. Getting started with solids
  3. Nutrients for your baby
  4. How much and how often (solids)
  5. Preparing your baby for food
  6. First food guides
  7. Allergies
  8. Weaning
  9. Remedies
  10. Recipes

The ideal baby shower gift idea in Australia

The Milk to Meals book is a great baby shower gift idea in Australia, as it incorporates Australian produce and refers to the safe and tried framework of baby led weaning in Australia. If you don’t know what to get your mama friend, this is a stunning hard-covered book with beautiful imagery throughout. There is so much to read and learn about each category of food, food allergies for babies and all the nutrients we should be looking for in each meal. This is a baby shower gift idea that will have mama well prepared by the time solids starts, and the Boob to Food book can be used again in due course when the next baby arrives.

If you have got a copy of the book and want to gift one to a fellow Boob to Food book recipes fan – you can even flag the pages and recipes that you have tried and loved.
